Chiropractic and Seasonal Allergies

Spring is here! The flowers are blooming, trees are green, and the weather is finally warm enough to enjoy the outdoors! Sounds amazing right? Maybe not if you suffer from season allergies. No wonder I woke up yesterday with itchy eyes and a stuffy nose.  That’s when I realized I was in desperate need of an adjustment.

I never had allergies until I was in my early 20’s.  Then I began experiencing all the normal allergy symptoms.  It was around the same time that I discovered chiropractic.  Little did I know that not only did chiropractic help my neck pain, but it also helped relieve my allergy symptoms! I bet you’re wondering “how in the world does chiropractic care help allergies?!”  Well let me tell you.

A Little about Allergies

Your immune system is your body’s way of protecting you from harmful substances.  Whenever you come into contact with a dangerous toxin, your body will activate against the substance causing inflammation along with itching, sneezing, coughing, and/or vomiting to get it out of your system. An allergic response, on the other hand, is your body’s misinterpretation of a normally harmless substance.

Since the nervous system is part of how your body interprets things, when the nervous system is interrupted your body will misinterpret the information causing the immune system to react as if it is a harmful substance therefore causing the allergy symptoms.

A Little about Chiropractic

Chiropractic care treats the neuromusculoskeletal system.  If your body is not in proper alignment the nerve signals get confused.  Let’s say that you’ve been experiencing some tightness between your shoulder blades due to stress.  That muscle tightness causes muscle imbalances which can pull the alignment of your spine and its associated nerves out of alignment.  This causes inflammation in that area.  Since each vertebra in your spine is correlated to a nerve, that particular nerve senses the inflammatory response.  So when your body sends a non-harmful stimulus to your brain through the same pathway, your brain senses the inflammation and activates an immune response to a harmful substance because of the misinterpretation.

So how does Chiropractic help Allergies?

The immune system and nervous system are very closely linked, which is great news if you suffer from allergies. By adjusting the spine, it removes the focal irritation and improves the communication between the central nervous system and the body.  Now the body can send the appropriate messages to the central nervous system and in return receive an appropriate response.

The effect of chiropractic on seasonal allergies has been well documented, and has been proven to be an effective treatment option.  While research shows not all allergy sufferers benefited from adjustments, the majority of chiropractic patients reported improvement.  If you suffer from seasonal allergies, why not consider chiropractic treatment as a natural approach and see if it can help you!
